Using the covers seems like a good way to protect the batteries from anything
that might cause a problem. I use them, but I have another reason. On the
opposite ends of my BLM-1 battery covers I have written with a Sharpie
"charged" and "discharged." The end with the contacts goes on the appropriate
side of the cover. That way I have a quick and convenient means of ascertaining
the current status (no pun intended) of each battery at a glance.
Anal? Perhaps, but it works for me. ;o)
