I'm not sure anyone knows if there's a particular "cause," or if it's
simply multifactorial (and/or possibly genetic).
A buddy of mine from college died of pancreatic cancer on Nov. 11, 2006.
He was diagnosed in late May or early June of '06, if memory serves.
By the time it presented, it had also metastasized to the liver and
spleen. In his case, it came to light after he had pain every single
time he ate anything (the pain being worse when he ate something
particularly "fatty," like a dish of ice cream or somesuch).
He was a Christian minister who worked in the inner-city of Winnipeg,
and lived a life most would have found to be exemplary. Was it
something in his diet? He didn't smoke, didn't drink. He certainly
didn't "deserve" it, either.
