It is certainly possible that Sigma could, and may make fine lenses. I once
owned a Contax G, and although I had some real problems with the design and
execution of the body, I had no problems with the lenses.
They were sharp as tacks, the equal of my German-made Zeiss lenses, and had
the distinctive look that is the results of the T* coating. Although they
had some of the distinctive loosness of all AF lenses, the finish and
materials exceeded that of similar priced lenses for AF SLR's.
The Cosina lenses for the Leicas is another example. I examined the
Leicasonic lens on a Panleica, and it seemed to be above average in
construction.
Any more, who knows? Certainly the kit lenses for today's DSLR's set new
lows for camera manufacturer badged lenses. My biggest concern is that lens
designers no longer feel it necessary to try to eliminate things like
vignetting and barrel and pincushion distortion, as it can be "eliminated"
by software.
