Ah, what we call Chinagraph pencils. Nice things. i knew a fine art  
photographer some years ago who used them to hand tint B&W prints by  
using the pencil and then washing them with cotton bud and solvent.  
Can't remember what the solvent is though - alcohol perhaps.
