Hi Bill,
As I understand it -
The images are captured as 16 bit but then converted to 8 bit before
being written as DNG files to the media card. Their stated reasons
were to reduce write time and storage requirements. They claim that
they saw no differences in quality between 8 bit saves and 16 bit
saves in their comparison tests.
Of course, lots of folks have differing opinions.
