According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the mercury in a CFB
is less than that which is kept out of the atmosphere by the coal not
burnt when you use a CFB instead of an incandescent bulb.
A CFB contains "about five milligrams" of mercury, but "the average
existing coal-fired power plant emits 13.6 milligrams of mercury to
power a typical incandescent bulb, but only 3.3 milligrams for a
CFL." (Spring 2007 issue of "Earthwise, News and Ideas for UCS
Members and Activists")
Thus, if your electricity comes from coal, the CFB introduces less
mercury into the environment that the incandescent bulb. Not to
mention that the avoided mercury is distributed into the air, whereas
CFBs can be sequestered from the waste stream through education and
enforcement, much as batteries and computer monitors are.
