I purchased a spare center column for my Bogen tripod, and then cut all 
but enough to clamp it into the legs to use for macro work. Fact is, I 
almost never use original longer one as the pod is much more stable w/o 
extending the center column. As I recall the replacement center post was 
not all that expensive.
