Actually a lot longer than that, if you consider the survival of the
Eastern Empire after the Fall of the West.
What is interesting about Rome to me (perhaps because it gores all
oxen) is that as best I can determine (he said, as though he were a
scholar), Rome (the Western Empire) fell because of three things:
High Taxes, Defense Spending, and Immigration. All of which were
intertwined and impossible to untangle.
