No intention to shoot you - or anyone else who appreciates warbirds -
down. The outward signs of a Griffon are relatively few. Common wisdom
says the Merlin sounds better and runs smoother, but lacks the sheer
power of the Griffon (1600 hp versus 2000+ hp). The best handling Spits
were probably the later Merlin marks. The sheer power of the Griffon
tended to overpower the aerodynamics of the airframe.

It was definitely mounted in a Spit which is why I assumed it was a
Merlin, a little knowledge, etc.....
