I learned quickly that there are many players who can field and catch the ball,
but who couldn't hit a lick. (I was one. A good curve ball made me damn near
run and hide, but I could catch anything that came even close.) Then there were
players who could hit almost anything thrown at them, but couldn't field, run,
or do anything else. You've got to be able to do both to play beyond high
school. Those are the people the pros come from. Me? I sat on the lumber most
of the time. The scolly got me semi-educated, though.
