Today, Olympus joins Pentax, Sony, and Canon in announcing digital cameras just
after the big CES
2007 show and as a pre-PMA product launch. There are seven new Olympus digital
cameras, one of
which features the longest optical zoom lens on the market: The new Olympus
SP-550 UZ Ultra Zoom,
which will include an 18X optical zoom lens (28- to 504-mm equivalent in 35-mm
photography). Up to
this point, the closest superzoom to this one would be Samsung's Pro815, which
has a 15X optical
zoom lens.
But the SP-550 UZ differs from the Samsung in a significant way: Along with the
SP-550 UZ's
powerful zoom, this 7.1-megapixel superzoom includes dual-image stabilization
to minimize blur and
camera shake, especially in low light. One of the IS features is sensor-based
IS. The SP-550 UZ
can also shoot in RAW, has lots of manual controls, comes with a 2.5-inch LCD
and electronic
viewfinder, allows for in-camera editing, shoots VGA-quality video with sound,
and includes 30
shooting modes. The Olympus claims the SP-550 will include a pre-capture
feature, allowing the
camera to store up to five frames in the camera's buffer before the shutter is
even depressed. The
SP-550 UZ will have a list price of $499.99.
