Interesting, I would have expected gyp-board, as it is gypsum held
together with paper. At first, I guessed it might be a linguistic
migration, like duct tape coming to be called duck tape by many. But I
see that a company called GIB is the major NZ maker. They don't give the
derivation of their name, but I'll bet it started out as three words,
the first of which was gypsum.
