I currently own both the Zuiko 35-80/2.8 and the Tamron 35-80/2.8-3.8. I
used the Tamron a few months before buying the Zuiko. It's an excellent
zoom, even for FF digital. At 35-65mm the Tamron is has excellent
performance. Above 65mm, and especially at 80mm, the Zuiko is a clear
winner. I also owned the Zuiko 85/2 (late MC model) but sold it after
getting the Zuiko zoom (I still miss that jewel though). In my tests the
Zuiko even beat that lens out! My Zuiko zoom is great throughout the range
but it is phenomenal at 80mm. Even beats out my Leica 80-200/4 Vario Elmar
zoom at that focal length. The Zuiko zoom has the best color and presence,
something that hard to quantify.
When you consider how small and light the Tamron zoom is, it's close focus
capability, and the amazing low prices they sell for it is a real bargain.
Depending on the situation it is capable of performing at/near fixed focal
length prime lenses:
Here's a full frame digital example shot from the Coit Tower (through
plastic/glass). Just look at the resolution, even in the extreme corners:

And one from the Zuiko zoom at 80mm showing it's great performance and those
great colors (FF digital):

BTW, if anyone is interested my Mint- Tamron 35-80 lens with Nikon HN-22
hood and Tamron 82mm cap (for the hood, so it can stay on the lens) I'm
selling for *cheap*. Email me off list and I'll send you some pictures of
this beauty.

Subject: [OM] Re: Zuiko 85mm F2 MC
Pier's generous offer raises what I consider an interesting question.
Has anyone compared the OM 35~80 to the Tamron 35~80 SP?
I too have the latter and am very pleased with the images it can
provide. I wonder how much better the OM might be, maximum aperture
notwithstanding.
