I just pulled the trigger on an R1800 Epson. A refurb from the Epson
site with instant 10% off is down to $418, with free shipping, through
Tuesday.
I reread Victor's reviews of it and the B9180 carefully and looked at
his samples side by side. I'm not sure which I would like in person
after spending some time with them, but I'm sure it would be a near
thing. And the Epson solution to pigment inks and glossy paper seems the
best to date. Also, the possible longevity advantage of the HP is
balanced against size, weight and price, all of which are of some
importance to me.
My 1270 works fine, but I find myself putting off any serious printing
over and over again, concerned about investing a lot of time and money
in prints that aren't stable long term. I could get into tht Ilford
Gallerie solution, but that's not cheap to start up with either and I
wonder what the long term outlook for Ilford is.
Carol Anne and others keep telling me I should give the world the
opportunity to acquire what they see as exceptional images. I'm not sure
if I really want to get into that, even assuming reasonably easy
success. I am sure, as Bill pointed out in the post that started this
thread, that I won't even try without archival quality materials,
whatever the quality of the images. So the R1800 seems a reasonable
entry point. Full 13" by up to 44" seems plenty big enough for now. And
if, by some fluke, I end up selling a lot of stuff, the natural step up
to the 3800 or more would be simple.
Don't expect a report any time soon. The free shipping is ground, I have
my hands full with other things and I have to clear a space for it.
Oh, I also like the capability to print on CD/DVDs.
