As a buyer, I prefer NOT using paypal - and dont use it (I have a paypal
verified address though).
All but the first couple of items I've bought off ebay have been paid using
postal orders - and I used a cheque once (for safety reasons when I won a
350D - I'm glad I did because I had to stop the cheque because the seller
gave me the wrong postcode then said he never received the cheque (despite
the post office saying he had) - he has since returned the cheque - he
claims his accountant put the cheque in the wrong file).
Even on items that have stipulated paypal only, I've emailed the seller and
asked if a postal order would be ok? Invariably, the answer has been yes and
so far I've not had any problems - surprisngly, even when a seller has
ceased to be registered on ebay prior to the goods arriving (as occurred
once).
I've not bought anything on eBay since the 350D incident - even though my
feeling is that low value items (i.e. under £100, say) seem, based on
succesful buying of over 30 items, to be safe enough to buy. But I wouldn't
risk buying an expensive item via ebay now.

PS No trees were harmed in the sending of this message and a very large
number of electrons were asked their permission to be terribly
inconvenienced. (And threw a party for them afterwards for being really cool
about it).
