I went to a Microsoft Technet seminar this morning.
They demo'd Vista and a few other upcoming software
technologies. Vista looks nice. Some very interesting
features. You can actually install Vista on most any
type of computer. However, for example if you install
it on a PC running Windows 2000 it will downgrade
features. In other words you wont get the live icons
and other bells/whistles. Video driver compatibility
is probably the biggest concern. The graphics engine
has been redesigned.
Another feature is the live icons. When you move your
mouse along the taskbar - you actually see a thumbnail
of what is open. If you are watching a video- the
video will actually be playing within the thumbnail.
When you resize a window.....instead of cutting the
document up...the document will resize along with the
window. For example when creating a Powerpoint
slide...the entire slide will decrease in size.
Other features are mostly backend - enterprise
features - networking, etc. Some nice bells and
whistles. Completely redesigned memory management,
live search, and even allows you to cache using the
memory of a USB thumbdrive. Will be interesting to
see how Vista does in the market.
I think this is the last Windows version with this
type of interface. In the future Microsoft will have
to come up with something else to keep pace with the
changes. Things such as voice recognition, etc.
Also future server OS's will be 64bit. Interesting how
16bit to 32bit was a no brainer. However, 32bit to
64bit is taking a little longer to become the norm.
