Brand name gold CDs are the best bet for archival storage. Also, best to store
in a case on
spindles, not in jewel cases or sleeves. There is a thicker hub which keeps the
discs apart. Keep
several backup copies of original and edited pix. Store one set of copies
offsite, eg, at a relative's
place.
For ongoing protection, best to use mirroring(=RAID 1) or RAID 5(using 3+
identical disks) for
most immediate backup if a drive fails. RAID 5 also vastly increases disk
speed by accessing the
disks in parallel.
Being too cheap, I use the free syncback program to backup to an older slower
HD in my system.
Syncback can also use FTP to backup. Very customisable, and can ZIP files
