Thanks for the comments guys. I choose the navigation approach because it's
the simplest way for me to do it. All the pages are put together in
photoshop then linked by image mapping - easy to do.
100K pics are the smallest I can reasonably go to while retaining detail.
Several of the pics are degrading on colour even so. I'm afraid it is not
totally suitable for dial up.
For the secondary menus I intend to put an 'information' icon on which will
lead to the larger pic with details and links. Long way from doing that
though.

Interesting photos and design concept, I have one suggestion though. From
the birds menu, you could make it more obvious that you're supposed to
click on the individual birds to get to their subsections. People surfing
the web have short attention spans and imagemaps arent a very common
navigation tool, so they might simply miss it. This isn't a problem in the
birds' subsections, because there the navigation items look like
thumbnails, which people instantly recognize.
By the way, is this a scene from "Macbeth"?
