The 300D was my first DSLR and second digital camera. It's certainly
capable of capturing some great shots.
It does have some limitations that seem more to differentiate it from
the 10D to which its innards clearly are clearly closely related, that
for any other reason. As Scott says, the Wasia hack firmware makes some
of these available. The ability to control the exposure setting of the
built-in flash(FEC), control the size of the JPEGs embedded in RAW files
and access to iso 3200 are the three I remember at the moment. I know
there are others less important to me.
I've had the hack installed for years and never had any trouble. If you
find yourself interested, I have a nice PDF explanation of the changes
somewhere around. Depending on how you implement remote flash that may
be triggered from the camera, FEC may turn out to be important. I have
found it to be very useful simply in using the flash.
Another thing you should be aware of is that the metering mode is not
separately selectable, but is determined by other settings. Not a real
problem, but different than I expected and than most DSLRs.
This does make a significant difference when using MF lenses with an
adapter. The meter tends to overexpose at faster stops in the AE modes,
but hardly at all in Manual, which I presume is because of the different
metering modes <http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/300D/300Dexp.jpg>.
