But if it does exist, and it is not a hardware switch, it must be a one-way
street - how can you undo it without writing to the card? Or should I not
be asking what is obvious to you, but you would rather it were not? :-(

Yes, but this is the entire card. I can't delete images or shoot new ones.
The big LCD display is showing "WRITE PROTECT"
and the frame-counter on top is flashing "-P-" and the display in the
viewfinder is flashing "Card P".
