DVD really isn't a particularly good long term solution unless you use
the gold ones, in which case it costs about as much as an external
drive. Gold CDs are more proven, but really too much overhead to create
and maintain, and still too expensive. Anything but the gold disks is
likely to just go poof on you and you won't know it until it's too late.
I had tape BU unit once and it was so slow, noisy and awkward to manage
that I stopped using it early on.
I think multiple HDs is the only practical answer for individuals from
both cost and management standpoints. I have a 500gb external HD that is
only powered up and connected when I'm backing up. Up well over 400gb
now. I wonder when I'll have the intestinal fortitude to do some house
cleaning. :-)
