Hi Moose
http://www.geebeephoto.com/2006/Temp.htm
At a little over 2 miles long it takes 40 minutes to get through. With the
advent of coal fuelled steam engines the bargees no longer had to 'walk'*
the boats through the tunnel but their joy was short lived as many were
asphyxiated due to the build up of fumes. They installed ventilation shafts
at regular intervals to overcome the problem.
Thanks for looking.

*planks used to be laid down protruding beyond the profile of the boat
bringing the tunnel walls within leg reach so that men could 'walk' along
the walls to propel the boat through the tunnel
