You're right. Ergonomics is not exactly a C strong point. But after
using a 20D and 5D a lot I'm getting used to it. Learning to navigate
the menus on these cameras requires learning to recognize the color
codes on the menu items. But I think you'll find the 400D improved in
this respect <http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos400d/page10.asp>
I haven't tried it but the layout looks more like the M*nolta A1 which
is pretty good. You get some recognizable icons (like tools for setup
items) in addition to the color codes.
