I have not owned this particular charger, but like many of these chargers the
published float
current spec is awfully high, it will overcharge AA's by ~45% after 24 hours on
float. I would
definitely recomend against leaving cells in, once they have reached full
charge. Unlike NiCd
,NiMh are easily damaged by overcharging. Putting a cheap timer (like used for
house lights) on
the charger to limit overall total time incl float time, is one way to reduce
this, although you
must still remove cells before 24hr cycle repeats.
Most simple chargers that require you to charge cells in pairs are basically a
problem waiting to
happen, unless you start with well matched cells and are meticulous about
always keeping your
cells in pairs. The lowest capacity cell typically gets overcharged and the
capacity then drops
still further each cycle.
Using cells of significantly different capacity together, is another way to
kill these cells
really quickly, as the lowest capacity cells effectively get reverse charged
while being used in
your camera. This can even cause them to vent and thus loose electrolyte.
Chargers that can also measure and display single cell capacity in a discharge
refresh mode, are
very handy to match sets of cells to be used together. I measure and then mark
matched cells that
I use together in groups.
If you are really a battery geek, then chargers that can display integrated
charge amp-hours input
and tested discharge amp-hours in refresh mode, are for you! Unfortunately
this may just show how
poor a job many of these chargers do in terms of reproduceability.
