Based on my (limited) experience with Italian drivers, I'll second
that. We visited northern Italy a few years ago and do not recall
any harrowing adventures either as passengers or as pedestrians. And
when I went cycling on the narrow mountain roads, the Italians were
far more courteous to me as a bicyclist than I've ever experienced
in the U.S. (where drivers are so mesmerized at someone on a vehicle
unlike theirs that they almost automatically drift your way).
