Walt, I'm jealous--Minnesota is too far north to support wild
populations of praying mantids (but we do have snow fleas--and you
don't). That is a fine shot. Wish I had some around to photograph,
too. Earwigs (aghh) have moved north into the state recently (ditto for
opposums since about 1965), but still no praying mantids. Come on,
global warming--bring us some praying mantids. (Hope that doesn't start
a thread.)
Several years ago we were vacationing in the Yucatan of Mexico, and
I picked up the Mayan word for a praying mantis: tzah-way-ECK. Accent
is on the last syallable. I used it a few times with some locals, much
to their surprise and delight. Especially when referring to the local
police and their practice of "mordeda" (mordida? "the bite," or
demanding a bribe for not giving you a driving citation). They (ahh,
the locals, not the cops) loved it.
Great shot! You would have made a fine entomologist, Walt.
