I'll throw my thoughts in. I have the Epson 2200 and the ink clogging is much
better than previous Epson printers. I rarely have problems with the ink. I
consider the [OT] to mean On Topic :-) What good is a camera without good
prints?
What I do have problems with are 1) the paper feeding, 2) the need to be
present with the printer when the ink goes low so you can stop and replace a
cartridge, and 3) sometimes a bit of dirt gets on this mylar strip used for
the head tracking. When that happens you can start to get offset prints. This
is a problem when printing borderless prints and creates a white edge down
one side. It took me some time to figure this out.
I had a cheapo HP printer that spewed ink over stuff, including this tracking
strip. The printer would then get lost and try to pound the print head into
the side of the printer. It has become useless. Perhaps the HP photo printers
are much better, this was a fax printer. Also, the HP software I installed
for this printer was equivalent to a virus. I've been extremely reluctant to
consider any HP printer because of software issues I have experienced.
I have never had much trouble with the 2200 ink clogging, only the mechanical
paper feed witn dirt on the tracking strip and icc profiles.
Once I had the wrong profile for a paper and it put so much ink down all the
rollers became a mess. The printer shakes the whole desk and is slow, but the
prints, when they are right, look great. But if the wrong profile procedure
is used the prints are a disaster. I rarely try too many different papers as
I hate the process of getting the profiles correct. I still have a box of
water color paper I have never printed on to my satisfaction.
The cost of a printer is probably minor compared to the total cost of inks
and paper. The light magenta runs out 4-5 times as often as some other inks,
switching to Matte Black ink is costly and time consuming, and I always have
to be present while it is printing to monitor for paper jams and low ink.
This is a topic of great interest and given the real cost of the printer is
not the printer, switching can make sense. I'm impatient waiting for a print,
just to find I messed up the profile. The Epson profiles seem to be rather
sensitive.
Printing is the hardest part for me to get results I like. Good blacks
especially. I would really like a printer I could use that is fairly permanent,
can do well on a wide variety of papers, does not require baby-sitting
while printing, is not a science experiment with new papers, etc. etc.
