I've been running XP for some time. It only runs chkdisk when first
starting after a system crash (blue screen). In that case, it warns that
it is going to run and gives you about 10-15 seconds to abort before it
starts. For the vast majority of installations, that's what it should do
for most reliable operation and disk health.
There is probably some way to stop it from doing this when running
something like RAID, which would be the responsibility of whoever
installs the RAID.
It is possible that whoever set it up XP could have set the task
scheduler to run chkdisk every so often. If that was set, it's not the
operating system's fault.
