Horses have killed more people than any other animal. As you mentioned with

The record is prolly clouded by the fact that they are scavengers
that would cheerfully snack on a corpse - people would then assume
that the lost hiker was killed by them rather than their own
stupidity. Trouble is that too many people prefer absolute positions
- always/never - I'm happy to accept that it has happened but not
commonly.
We get our priorities wrong anyway. The most dangerous dog is that
thing curled up on the rug at home - they kill a goodly number of
humans every year and not because they're just seriously hungry. Of
course, they get far more opportunity.
