If leaning against a tree is not possible, but a fence post is at hand, try
strapping the monopod to the post. I keep a pair of Velcro luggage strap
with mine, somewhat similar to these:

I usually prefer to use a light ball head with a monopod so I can change the
camera orientation between horizontal and vertical. Monopods can be used a
lot of ways. Sometimes I will lean mine against a tree and get quite solid
