Shadow (dark areas) fall to the left, highlights to the right. The height
of the 'columns' indicate the number of pixels that are a particular tone.
A good exposure will fall somewhere in between (not necessarily in the
middle). Adjust exposure to avoid 'clipping' which is when the columns
are touching the right or left sides of the display. Clipping means you
lose detail, highlights turn to pure white and shadows go pure black.
After taking a photo and if it is displayed on the screen, press Info
button to scroll through the display options and the last couple will show
either the shadows or highlights that are clipped. These areas will flash
on and off. Then adjust your exposure and take another photo.
