Experiences vary.
*My* XP machines are generally quite reliable; the Dell workstation
can putter away for weeks without incident, while my laptops tend to
have the occasional boot lock-up ('bout once or twice a month). It's
no big -- kill the power and re-boot.
Your cousin may have other issues -- viruses or malware, badly
fragmented hive files, etc. Various utilities exist to analyze and
(if necessary) rectify these problems. WinXP's got its problems, but
I sure don't miss Win95!
