I use that combination often to good measure. Just be careful, as the
range can easily chew up those batteries pretty quickly. I use a Quantum 1
for most of that shooting to deal with that.
For my daughters' plays, I don't use flash though, just the 50-200 on a
monopod with a preferred seat. Check out this gallery for some shots of my
kids' play last year...all with the 50-200, usually at 200mm.

FYI, it was almost all shot in Manual mode, hand-adjusted as the actors
moved or the light changed. I found that method far superior to spot
metering, etc. Given that the lighting stayed pretty constant, it was a
good choice.
