I remember reading an article by Peter Krause (from Ilford originally) on the
Delta Film
technology and he had electron microscope photos of silver grains. Often they
seemed to be more
like long thin hairs and they certainly seemed to be different sizes and size
seemed affected by
adjacent grains (clumping). Some of those B&W films of course have different
layers with
different sensitivity and so different average grain size. This means even
apart from solvency
effects of developer etc which affect grain size "The aparent Grain Size"
depends on relative
exposure of different layers locally.
