If you power cycle it once a week for 10 years, that's 520 power cycles. I think the chance of a failure is essentially zero. If you leave it running 24/7 that's about 90,000 hours which is still below the MTBF of most drives (200,000 hours or more IIRC). -jeff ----Original Message Follows---- From: Wayne Harridge <wayneharridge@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Keep in mind that you may actually be reducing the MTBF of the drives by using them in this way due to thermal & electrical cycling. There are many factors to consider, but you might be better off keeping these drives powered up continuously. ...Wayne > Chuck Norcutt <chucknorcutt@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > I have no concerns about their electronic or mechanical > life since the only time they're ever powered on is when they're > actually performing a backup which is, at most, once a week. ============================================== List usage info: http://www.zuikoholic.com List nannies: olympusadmin@xxxxxxxxxx ============================================== |
