Chris,
I just put the FL-50 on the E-1, turned on the E-1, then cycled the FL-50
through a dozen on/off cycles with no problem a'tall. The slightest press of
the button did the trick and there was no hint of uncertainty or hesitation on
the part of the flash. Sounds like you may have an iffy switch.
Handsome hen, by the way. I grew up with chickens all around, Rhode Island
Reds. With a hen, of course, the question is not if she is sitting or setting,
but if, when she cackles, she is laying or lying.
