Hi all,
My old 12" DIGITAL (tm) crt screen died and I asked my repairman what to
do for a replacement. I also had (have) a generic "Made in Taiwan" screen
that I suggest he examine for repair - it was a victim of an unsuccessful
Linux installation that seemed to wreck it..
The first thing I found is that CRT screens are now next to totally unavailable
new in New Zealand now. He offered me a flat LCD 17" screen for $(NZ)450.
I declined as I don't have the space for a 17" screen in my workspace, and
anyway, I didn't want an LCD screen.
He then suggested I go to the city recycling shed, which I did, The max price
for a CRT screen there is $6. I picked one up, then took my Taiwanese
screen to him for assessment. It had been a high end unit when purchased,
with fine pitch and nice colour. (The DIGITAL (tm) unit was not all that fine
pitch and the colour always was a bit off. In addition apparently it takes
repair technicians 2 hours just to open up these units)
While it is being looked at he offered me an OPTIQUEST CRT unit made by
Viewsonic. It is also for sale for $60. It is one he picked up at the recyclers
for $6, knowing hidden gold when he saw it.
So I am using it right now. What a unit !! It is VERY fine pitch, and the
colour is extremely nice. Looking at Graeme Battison's shots is an even
greater pleasure with it, and Johan Malmstrom's Flickr images seem to have
been etched under a microscope, they seem so fine.
I am to collect my Taiwan unit tomorrow (apparently it works OK without
repair - we'll see about that - it didn't 2 years ago when I disconnected it),
but it will probably sit un-used as a backup unit, since I plan to buy the
Optiquest 1570DC unit. It is a real eye-opener. With a view to the time when
I put together a computer just for images, I will probably grab one or two
larger Optiquest screens while they are available from people"upgrading"
their machines.
I donated my recycling shed CRT unit back to them on the way home. Just
walking through there was worth the $6 for education and entertainment.
