It's good to listen to the customer, their complaints, their dreams.
But you also have to innovate and arouse new dreams - and new
complaints. What member of the public demanded the internet?
Or the nuclear bomb? Or the cellphone? But these things
transformed the world. Even the OM-1 led to diets for all
cameras.
There are things for Oly to do now. Why not a bees-eye or
holographic lens for infinite depth of focus and exposure?
As Rumsfeld said, "As we know, there are known knowns:
There are things we know we know. We also know there are
known unknowns: That is to say, we know there are some things
we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns: The
ones we don't know we don't know."
Oly should concentrate on bringing undeveloped Knowns to
market and researching the Unknowns of both kinds. There's a
lot more to discover in light and imaging.
