Batteries in my OM2s seem to last a long time. I can't remember the last
time I changed them, but it's been at least a year. I never set the shutter
speed to mechanical, but I do take care that the camera is packed in the bag
so that there is nothing pressing the shutter release. I guess I got used to
that anyways, having had an OM10 and OMPC for years, which have no "safety
mechanical" setting that prevents that kind of battery drain.
