The more things change, the more they stay the same. Back in the '30s, when
Huey Long was running for governor of Louisiana, in a radio speech the evening
before the election, when it was too late for any meaningful rebuttal or
explanation from his rival, he said, as much as he regretted having to do so,
he felt it his duty to inform the voters that his opponent practiced nepotism
in his place of business and that he had a sister way up to New York City who
was a well-known thespian. It worked. Huey won in a landslide.
