"Spot-on" Andrew, if I may say so. I looked at Pangerl, Mannheim, The OM
System lens handbook and the Sales Info File. Only the latter is explicit
and correct - the 8/2.8 is not fitted with the Meter Coupling Lever which
interfaces with the cam in the canera body at 11 o'clock in the lens throat
as you look into the body. In fact, Pangerl is completely wrong, saying
that the Auto Diaphragm interfaces with the TTL system, because without that
lever, it can't do so.

On a manual diaphragm lens, the lever is fixed, and signals to the body that
the lens is at "full aperture" (which is a determined position regardless of
what is the actual aperture value). Stopping down then reduces the light
hitting the meter. On an auto diaphragm lens at full aperture, the lever
also signals to the body that the lens is at "full aperture" but as the
diaphragm ring is turne by one stop, the lever moves an equivalent amount to
signal to the metering system to apply a one stop correction to the amount
of light hitting the meter cell. And so on.

I surmise in this case that the metering system does not know what is full
aperture, and cannot know what the lens is actually set to use.

As I remember, the 8mm Zuiko lacks the cam that tells the body what aperture
has been preset - it just has the aperture stop-down lever.
Consequently, the body cannot meter accurately and metering has to be
manual.
I have a Sigma 8mm and could not persuade it meter correctly on an
OM1 ('cos I couldn't see the needle which vanished into the black
circle!) or on an OM2000 with spot metering. I suspect that the amount of
black in the frame just confuses the hell out of the meter.
These problems may be the reason that Oly decided not to couple the metering
on this lens. Does it work with a 4/4T set on auto with spot metering? (can
you even do that - I forget).
I use a lovely little Voigtlander shoe-mount meter to do the business.
