I don't think your display is functioning correctly.
The LCD back light is a power hog.
I have used the large Li-ion battery pack which fits underneath. Even with
flash I could get hundreds of shots on a charge. It has a nominal rating > 5
times that of your Nimh.
There is also an AC power pack for studio use. I built my own from some junk I
had lying around. Although the DC plug is a standard power supply type, it is
not a very common size.
You can buy a third party rechargeable Li-ion CR3V relacement , that should
work a bit better than the niMh, although I have not used them. Probably has
~2x the capacity of the Nimh and may work better because of higher voltage.
The firmware is only upgradeable by Oly. They used to charge ~$20 or so??. I
think it improves focus speed a little, but main advantage is it adds menu
item, to map out bad pixels if you shoot a white card or something.
