Well, you could always compromise - as has been done here. The roadwarning
signs are still in imperial "yardage", but are placed, for example 330 yards
(990 feet) before the hazard, be it ice, animals crossing the road, a
T-junction. Uniformly. Strange? No, 990 feet = 300 meters, but I guess we
aren't supposed to notice.

I still recall the outrage expressed when highway distance signs were posted
in both miles and kilometers in preparation for a conversion to metric. I
was looking forward to switching but others prevailed and the signs had the
metric references removed.
