Interesting question. I was just about to post about an extention to XP
SP2. MS calls it a "PowerToy"
What it does is add a thumbnail viewer for several RAW formats,
including C, N and Oly .ORF files to Windows Explorer and a RAW viewer
that opens upon double clicking on any image in Explorer.
Works great on Can*n .CRW files. An extra I didn't notice in the
documentation is that a little box pops up with mouse-over that shows
all the important EXIF info.
That's the good news. The bad news is that whether it will install or
not on any given system is uncertain based on my limited experience. As
I posted, I just updated my desktop to XP pro SP2, partly to get the RAW
viewer capabilites. It installed without a hitch.
I also have a week old Sony VAIO notebook with XP Home SP2 reinstalled.
The viewer won't install, somehow not sensing the proper installation of
.NET Framework, whatever that is. In any case, I wasted a lot of time on
it and am in a long email exchange with a MS techie about it, unless he
has given up and gone away. I may have to use another viewer.
A shame, too, as part of my excuse for updating my notebook is as a
storage device and viewer/editor for images taken on the road. I don't
want to do serious editing, but do want to be able to see full detail
so I can dump the junk - unless I decide to see if I can get a gallery
show of blurry, crooked, poorly exposed and framed shots of nothing much
in particular. In that case, I can use it to edit out the crisp, clear,
interesting ones. I used my 6 year old, tiny notebook for this with the
old 2mp camera, but it chokes on the RAW files from the 300D. Well, I
guess a 300mz processor and 128mb of memory just doesn't cut it for much
anymore.
