Greetings All,
This past tuesday evening I attended our monthly church Men's Club
meeting mainly to hear the guest speaker, a fellow in his early 40's who, back
in 1988 after getting out of the Airforce, decided to take some time and hike
the entire Appalachian Trail start-to-finish in one trip. He began his trip on
Mt. Spencer, Georgia in mid-April and 2100 miles later reached the summit of
Mt. Katahdin (sic), Maine around mid-October. His presentation was an informal
account of his adventures while showing color transparencies he took along the
way. During the question-and -answer period I posed the following questions:
how many pairs of boots did you go through?; how many rolls of film did you
shoot?; and what camera did you use? The answers: three pairs of good quality
boots, 20 rolls of Ektachrome and........................(drum roll
please)............. an Olympus XA! It warmed my heart.

Some months back you may recall I posted a message about an upcoming
Photo contest at Grandfather Mtn, NC. Well the event was held the weekend of
June 3rd and I had a very good time. The weather was a bit dicey on Friday
(rained all day), but Sat/Sun were great...bright cloudy both days. So not much
in the way of sunset/sunrise photos but great light for just about anything
else. The winning entries should be posted any day now on their website:

                www.grandfather.com/

        Look for Special Events 2006.

The only bad news (at least for me), they announced that this would be
the last year of the contest for film; from here on out digital only. Scattered
boo and hiss drowned out by the cheers from the younger crowd who made the
switch a long time ago. Well this may force my hand into making the digital
plunge. I've looked at a number of DSLR's the last few days and I must says
that none of them are anywhere near as comfortable as any of my OM's and the
array of buttons and menu's make my head spin. I must admit though, I could get
used to auto-focus. Kind of makes up for the dimmer viewfinder. So far I'm
partial to the Pent*x D ist and the C*non Rebel XL/ 350D. Would love to check
out Oly E-300 and E-1 but I can't get my hands on either in Charleston. Will
likely in the next few weeks be putting up the FS sign to finance what ever I
decide to buy. All advice on selection welcome since I don't know didily about
digital.
