I'm not sure why (avoidance of distortion?) but I've always understood
to avoid wide angle lenses for multi-image panoramas. I usually shoot
at 50mm or its digital equivalent. If you're trying to produce a wide
and narrow pano (I don't go for this 360 degree or spherical stuff) a
wide lens may also include a lot of sky or ground that you'll ultimately
have to crop away.
Of course, if you want to make a really huge print you would use a
longer focal length and take more images to collect more detail.
