Hi Guys,
Totally OT message, but seeking help from the only group of people I
know with such a wide and varied knowledge base ! (Is that creepy
enough ?! Wasn't meant to be !).
As I mentioned a few weeks back, I've been having PC issues. I enquired
about opinions of PC vs Mac (cue much heated debate !). FWIW, I decided
that as I wasn't entirely convinced of the benefits of a PowerMac G5, I
have not gone down that route - yet. For the price of a PowerMac G5, I
can get a new PC and a Mac Mini as well. This is my chosen path for
now, and that way I can make a truly informed decision.
Anyway, I have the new PC and am setting it up. I'm using Mozilla
Firefox for web browsing, which seems very good. A few people here have
mentioned it recently on another thread. Question - I know where IE
stores the "favourites" but where does Firefox store the "bookmarks" ?
I've also installed Mozilla Thunderbird for email, but I'm not quite as
sure about that as I am about Firefox. Seems OK, but I'm REALLY nervous
about trying to import my old mail into this system. Last time I tried
something like this (from OE to full version Outl**k) it managed to lose
or screw up most of my mail. Took me 3 very long, late nights and some
fairly colourful languafe to sort it out ! And does Thunderbird have
the same archiving capabilities as Outl**k ? I'd actually prefer it if
they worked better than Outl**k !! Anyone been using Thunderbird for a
while and have any comments ?
Final one for now, the use of fonts. A few years ago I did one of my
regular PC rebuilds. Transferred all my data, formatted C: drive,
re-installed. All OK except some documents where I'd used fancy fonts.
Of course, I hadn't backed up the fonts. So, now I do just that, and
have copied all my fonts into the new machine. All seems OK now,
BUT.... before I copied my fonts across I did a little test. I had made
pdf's of a few documents with some fancy fonts and graphics. I assumed
that as they were pdf's they wouldn't be dependent on the font files.
This was my belt-and-braces approach, and I was rather confused to see
the pdf files with the fonts changed. After I'd put the fonts back in
the font directory, all was OK again. I thought the pdf format was a
graphical one, so wouldn't rely on fonts ?
That's all for now. If anyone can enlighten me that would be great.
Also, if people would rather keep it off-list, especially with the
possibility of a flame-war over which mail client is best, then feel
free to mail me off-list !
Thanks,
Jon
