Hi all,
Well so far we've got 32 participants and half a dozen question
marks. Three each from Australia and Canada, five Europeans, one from New
Zealand and twelve (probably more) from the USA.
At this stage it looks like the camera will start in Australia then go to
New Zealand, then to USA or Canada, to Europe then back to
Australia. Stop-overs in the Middle East, India or Asia would be nice
additions - does anyone from there want to participate?
There is a lot of support for sending an OM-1 on the journey but I'm unsure
whether we should do this in light of postage/customs problems that have
been mentioned. I'm thinking that this time we should use a cheap and
lightweight camera to test the waters. Depending on our experience with
this, next time we could do it again with an OM-1.
So the field is now narrowed to either a Trip 35, an XA-series or possibly
a 35RC. I have a Trip 35, XA1 or XA2 camera that I'd be happy to send. I
don't have a 35RC but Marc Lawrence (Australia) has generously volunteered
his 35RC.
I must admit I'm enamored of the idea of sending a Trip on a trip, I like
the symbolism and the coolness factor.
But OTOH using a 35RC would expand our creative possibilities with the
choice of shutter speed/aperture combinations available. It has a 42mm
f2.8 lens, focuses down to 3 feet, shutter speeds from 1/15th to 1/500th
plus B, has AE exposure and manual over-ride, an ASA range of 25-800 and
weighs 15oz. None of the other cameras proposed offer this amount of
flexibility, especially with shutter speeds.
So I'm going to make an executive decision and narrow the field to either a
Trip 35 or a 35RC.
I'd like all participants to vote for which of these two we'll use, email
me off-list (to save some boring traffic for other listee's) and I'll
compile the results and let the list know.
