Not usually. In fact, particularly with birds, flash doesn't even scare them
away. They may freeze for a moment with a birdy "What the **** was that?"
expression, but then they'll go right back to whatever they were doing.
I have found that the thing that scares critters the most with a remote camera
setup is the big, bright eye staring at them. Set a camera on a tripod with a
lens with a moderately large front element, then step around to the front and
see. The light shining through the viewfinder makes it look like a big, bright
circle, or eye. They may be wary of it for a while, then accept it, but then
when you trip the shutter, the big eye blinks, and the creatures all scram.
I have an old eyecup from which I've removed the rubber part, and where a
corrective lens would go inside, I have inserted one U.S. penny, which is
exactly the right size. I always just stick it on the viewfinder in these
circumstances to keep the big eye dark and unblinking. It may look strange,
but it works far better than trying to cover up the camera with something that
may flap in the breeze, because that definitely scares off the subject matter.
