I agree with Iwert. I have four MDs (two 2s and two 1s) and four winders. I
can't help but prefer the MDs, especially the 2s, but most of the reasons for
that preference are purely subjective: looks and sounds cooler, has more
buttons and an LCD frame counter. Did I mention is sounds way more better?
Objectively, the disadvantages, like dying Ni-Cd packs and the necessity to
recharge regularly, may well make the winders the sensible and practicaal
choice if you don't need the speed. I rarely -- actually, nearly never --
shoot at 5 FPS, but I still prefer the motor drives. So much for logic. If I
were really logical, would I be a Zuikoholic and here?
One real advantage, though: I do a fair amount of bird and wildlife
photography. Sometimes in below-freezing weather I'll stick the OM-3 (which
works just fine, of course, when the batteries go kaput in the cold) outside on
a tripod with a motor drive, while I sit inside by the fire with the M.18V
Control Grip in one hand and an appropriate beverage in the other, monitoring
the proceedings through a window. I'm not sure how long a winder would keep
going in those conditions.
